In British service, the American Light Tank M3, dubbed the 'General Stuart' after Confederate Civil War general 'Jeb' Stuart, was the first tank provided via lend-lease before the U.S. entered WWII. Arriving in Egypt in July 1941, it fought alongside Crusaders in Operation Crusader, with only 35 remaining by its end. Despite British doctrine favoring firing on the move, Stuart crews found success by swiftly approaching enemies, stopping briefly, and targeting panzers' side armor with their 37mm guns.
